The Dollar Fortress — Audio-Video Edition
Episode 2 of the Pattern Nexus Audio-Video series explains how Bretton Woods, the Marshall Plan, capital controls, the IMF, the World Bank, and the 1951 Treasury–Federal Reserve Accord forged the first dollar-liquidity regime between 1947 and 1953.
About this episode
- The postwar monetary order was deliberately engineered. Bretton Woods placed the dollar at the center of a fixed-but-adjustable exchange-rate system, with official dollar-to-gold convertibility at $35 an ounce.
- The Marshall Plan supplied the liquidity boot sequence. Reconstruction aid restored European production while injecting dollars, supporting U.S. exports, and drawing allies into the new settlement network.
- Stability required walls. Capital controls, managed interest rates, regulated bank balance sheets, and directed credit constrained destabilizing flows and helped governments carry wartime debt.
- The 1951 Treasury–Federal Reserve Accord rewired the control room. It ended the Federal Reserve's obligation to peg Treasury yields and restored room for independent monetary policy inside the Bretton Woods system.
Episode 1 followed the industrial supercycle that built the modern machine. Episode 2 follows the monetary and geopolitical architecture built to control that machine after two world wars and a global depression.

The postwar dollar system was built, not discovered
Between 1947 and 1953, dollar pegs, gold convertibility, reconstruction aid, capital controls, multilateral lending, managed domestic credit, and central-bank reform fused into one operating architecture.
The modern parallel is not a copy of Bretton Woods. It is the return of the same design questions around AI infrastructure, energy systems, Treasury collateral, stablecoins, tokenized assets, digital identity, programmable settlement, and control over the gateways.
